 Are we Adulting yet?

 26....
Thomas is 26 now. I cannot believe we have come this far so quickly!
He has successfully completed his Associates Degree in Disability Studies, and is currently finishing up his Bachelor of Science in Communications and Media. He has received scholarships and awards for his academics. He is hoping to work for either he Islanders hockey team, or for MSG in general.  His expansive knowledge of all things sports is astonishing! His analysis of teams, players, plays, and managers is always spot on. He write a sports blog on Blogger called  'Buckley Knows Best' . It is an excellent Blog!

He is an amazing man, with a remarkable soul and some amazing insight. He greets each day with a smile and the goal to make others feel better about themselves with his words or actions. He is quite independent for someone who needs the amount of personal help in his ADL's.
He has a great sense of humor, and is very responsible when he needs to be.

Rosie (Victoria) will be graduating this semester with her BS in Fashion Merchandising/product development. She too, is a remarkable young woman--funny, sarcastic, smart, responsible, who seems much older and wiser than her 22 years.  She and I have a great time together--I like her--I like her as a person, and am very proud of her.

We've done good--Bob and I. So grateful for all the guidance and assistance along the way. Yes, it takes a village of family, friends, neighbors and personal care assistants to help you, hold your hand, and give you a shoulder to cry on when it is needed. When you so do NOT want to 'Adult'.

So how did we get here and where are we going?  Does anyone really know?
We go to bed at night, and wake up each day thankful.   Start each day knowing that we only have control of the present moment, which soon becomes the past. Don't sweat the small shit. Don't get angry over what is beyond your control.  Do the very best you can for that day. Try not to judge.
Try to empathize. Try to help if you can.

Pretty tall order! Are we always successful?  HAH! So the next day we try again, and again until it becomes easier, and we get better at it.  You must believe that Anything IS possible. Oh yes, you also need a really good sense of humor for the times where Tom accidentally drives his power wheelchair down a flight of stairs at SUNY Old Westbury and ends up in the ER---MOM: "hey Tom, should we pull the sheet up over your head and take a pic and send to F and F?"  TOM:(cracks up)

Or the time he backed up too far on the handicap platform off the top step of our back door and fell BACKWARD with the large, heavy vegetable cage catching him so he didn't go splat--- TOM:" HEY MOM, can you give me a hand?  But Take a picture first" ( I did--I so wish I could find it to post)

So much has happened over the last 4 years, and I have no clue as to where we are going. Eventually the road appears.
